52 weeks to better Genealogy - Militari in famiglia

Following 52 weeks to better genealogy, by Ami Coffin, and hosted by Geneabloggers, which is a series of blogging prompts to genealogy blogs around the globe, this week I'll search for Military stories.
Not records, helas, because in Italy where is no on-line Archive to look for.
To begin with, the men of the family that were alive for WW2 were:
my grandfather Alfonso, he was 47 when it began - he managed a factory which produced fruits and vegetables for the Italian army in Borghetto Santo Spirito (SV)
my grandfather Aldo, he was 42 - moved his family in Novi Ligure (AL), far from the bombs. I don't know what he did, probably working in the Naval Industry...
my father-in-law Ermanno was 17, but they said he went in the Navy as a volunteer
my husband's grandfather Ottavio, he was 41 and lived in Africa, where he worked as a truck driver.
The other one, Ugo was 58 and worked as a Town Clerk in Ferrara, managing an Office with 110 employees for the war supplies.
In WW1 informations are lacking even more:
my grandfather Alfonso, he was 22 when it began, so he probably served, getting maybe a Cross of Honor
my grandfather Aldo, he was 17 at the beginning... but I have still no stories to tell!
my husband's grandfather Ottavio, he was 16 at the beginning. He was 18 for the last year of war, so I don't know whether he joined or not.
the other one, Ugo was 33 and joined in April, 1915. As Ferrara was declared a war zone, he was assigned to control the documents of officiers on the express train, in the stretch from Ferrara to Marzabotto.
He went to the front twice, on a mission, when the cholera raged, but came back safe.
He commanded the Carabinieri station in Denore and later went to Comacchio until the end of the war.

52 weeks to better genealogy - week 16

Questa settimana l'obiettivo della sfida per una migliore genealogia chiede di riportare i risultati di una ricerca sul catalogo on line della biblioteca che ci interessa, sia essa quella di zona che quella della zona in cui stiamo svolgendo ricerche.
Nel mio caso la biblioteca è una: la biblioteca Berio di Genova!
Il catalogo unificato è consultabile da qui.
Io sono passata in biblioteca, per la prima volta dopo anni, il mese scorso. Già trovarla è stato difficile! Perchè l'hanno spostata.... nel 1998 .
Nella nuova sede, molto più grande e moderna, non ho saputo muovermi.
Sono andata all'ultimo piano, il sesto, dove viene conservata la parte locale, cioè libri su Genova e il suo territorio, e ho curiosato fra i volumi di immagini.
Ora mi piacerebbe consultare i microfilm dei quotidiani locali, ma non ho idea di come si faccia. Lo scoprirò domani!

Week 16: Check out the online library catalog of a university. You may use one close to you, or one in the area of your research. Browse around the library website and investigate the various archival collections. Make note of ones that may assist you in your own research.
MY library is Berio's, in Genova.
They have a unified catalog with the University, you can browse here.
I've been there last month, for the first time after several years. It was difficult even to find it! They moved ...back in 1998.
The new headquarters are bigger and modern, and I didn't know where to go.
I've been to the 6th floor, where the local section is, with many books on Genova and the region, and I looked at images on Genova in the past.
Now I'd like to see the local newspaper microfilm, but I've got no idea on how to do it. Tomorrow I'll find out!

Week 14: Use a different search engine for your online genealogy research. Google is quite popular, but other search engines may provide different results. Try Yahoo! Search, Bing, Ask.com, Dogpile, and even Clusty. Pick an unusual surname and search it in different engines. Make note of the top 10 page returns for each.

Così ho preso il mio cognome e ho guardato cosa ne veniva fuori...
SAVIANE è un cognome abbastanza inusuale, soprattutto dove abito, mentre è molto comune in Veneto, in particolare in alcuni comuni, dove sembra che si chiamino tutti così!
Mio nonno, Alfonso Saviane, nacque a Genova nel 1893. Io ho sempre creduto che arrivasse da Castelfranco Veneto, perchè è quello che in casa si raccontava, ma forse dovrò risalire indietro di qualche generazione per tornare in Veneto...
la ricerca su Google mi ha dato per la maggior parte risultati con il mio nome! E poi una biografia di Benetton pubblicata da un Saviane, nonchè i soliti siti su libri di Giorgio S., illustre scrittore.
Su Yahoo il mio contributo personale diminuisce, in favore di una studiosa, Livia S. Rimane Giorgio S. e spunta un sito nuovo: www.italiansrus.com, che nomina S. in una lista di cognomi ma senza link... cosa servirà non si sa C'è poi un sito personale di genealogia in cui un uomo si chiama S. di nome, scelta particolare che non capisco molto, e si finisce con un Jas Antonia S. cubano imbarcato su una nave per gli States. Tutte cose strane, niente di utile perchè riconducibile alla mia ricerca personale.
Sul motore di ricerca Bing purtroppo le cose vanno peggio: oltre al sito citato prima italiansrus.com e ai soliti risultati sul lavoro di Livia S. e sullo scrittore Giorgio S. escono risultati presi evidentemente da siti che non c'entrano nulla con la ricerca.
Altro motore, altri risultati: su it.ask.com l'argomento genealogia è meglio centrato. Trovo i risultati con il mio nome, quelli di Giorgio S. ma anche la pagina con chi si è chiamato così di nome, e il sito dei cognomi: www.surnamesinitaly.com Ma che stranezze mettono su Internet?
Francamente credo che Internet abbia tantissime informazioni, anche per chi come me cerca nel passato e non nell'attualità, ma per come la vedo bisogna cercare e navigare, saltando di palo in frasca, per capitare per caso su nuovi siti interessanti.
